Sustainability Professional Development Fund

Investing in educators. Advancing sustainable schools.

Overview

The Sustainability Professional Development Fund supports educators across the district in building the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to integrate sustainability into teaching and learning. By investing in professional growth, this fund helps ensure that sustainability is not an add-on, but a meaningful and lasting part of the student experience.

Why It Matters

Today’s students are growing up in a world where environmental stewardship, resource management, and systems thinking are essential. Educators play a critical role in preparing students to understand and respond to these challenges.

This fund empowers teachers and staff to bring sustainability concepts into classrooms in relevant, engaging, and age-appropriate ways—helping students connect learning to real-world impact.

What the Fund Supports

The Sustainability Professional Development Fund provides resources for:

  • Workshops, trainings, and conferences focused on sustainability and environmental education

  • Curriculum development and cross-disciplinary collaboration

  • Classroom innovation that integrates sustainability into core subjects

  • Teacher-led initiatives that promote sustainable practices in schools

Impact

Through this fund, educators gain access to high-quality professional learning opportunities that translate directly into classroom practice. The result is richer instruction, increased student engagement, and a stronger connection between academic content and real-world issues.

Over time, this investment builds a culture of sustainability across schools—where students not only learn about environmental responsibility, but see it modeled and practiced every day.

Looking Ahead

The Sustainability Professional Development Fund is a long-term investment in both educators and students. By supporting those who teach, we strengthen our ability to prepare the next generation to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

For just $250, you can fund sustainability professional development for one teacher. Our goal is to support our first cohort of 22 teachers—two per school—with the long-term vision of training every teacher across the district. All funds directly support district-approved professional development for licensed teachers in LOSD.

The result is more engaging classroom experiences and students who are better prepared to think critically about the world around them.

Developed in partnership with the Lake Oswego Sustainability Network, this effort helps build a lasting culture of sustainability in our schools—one that benefits every student, every day.
