Mackenzie Magaurn first decided she wanted to be a teacher when she was in the second grade at Forest Hills Elementary. Thanks to the support of many outstanding Lake Oswego teachers, Mackenzie now teaches a kindergarten class right down the hall from the second grade teacher who first inspired her, Mrs. Cohen.
Mackenzie’s dream wouldn’t have been possible without all the encouragement she received in the classroom along the way. “Teachers in Lake Oswego have a way of inspiring children and pushing them farther than they think they can go,” says Mackenzie. “I remember when I was growing up, teachers would always tell me, ‘You can do this. Keep trying.’”
She recalls how her teachers challenged her to think independently and find solutions. She felt that as Lake Oswego student, she was held to a higher standard, which helped prepare her for college. “My freshman year of college was almost easy because high school was such a challenge, but I felt so supported. I felt like I learned persistence, which helped me to push through and keep learning.”
Mackenzie, now in her second year of teaching, continues to be impressed with the incredible support shown by parents and the community. “They truly want Lake Oswego to be the best community it can be,” says Mackenzie.
An appreciation for the importance of education explains why so many Lake Oswego families give to the Lake Oswego Schools Foundation each year. The Foundation helps schools hire more teachers, which provides a more advanced curriculum and more individualized attention for students. This also means kids have access to additional classes like PE and music, which according to Mackenzie, are vital for the success of her students.
“As a kindergarten teacher, I have little kiddos who just need to wiggle throughout the day,” says Mackenzie. “I couldn’t imagine my classroom or our school day without PE and music.”
By donating to the foundation, you’re supporting teachers like Mackenzie, who are proof that investing in our kids today means investing in the future of Lake Oswego.
